Project Description:

Uppark House is a fine example of a 17th-century country house, crowning the South Downs ridge in West Sussex. Cherished by generations of families, Uppark has attracted a succession of colourful owners, residents and visitors including the Fetherstonhaugh family, Emma Hamilton and a young H.G. Wells.

External Decoration works to Uppark House

As some of the contingency/provisional monies in the 1^st phase were not spent, this allowed the National Trust to embark on the External Decorations project which started in the last few months of the Essential Repair phase. A lot of work was required to protect the fabric of the mansion on this contract.

The exposed south elevation on the mansion suffers the full blast of the weather and over the years had fallen into a dangerous state of disrepair and degradation.  Greendale Construction undertook the complete redecoration of the South Elevation of the mansion and some windows in the East Pavillion which were badly corroded.

• A fully boarded scaffold was erected on the South Elevation.
• Greendale Construction repointed and carried out brickwork and benching repairs to chimneys on this elevation.
• Lead gutters were cleared of Guano
• All the existing paint had to be carefully removed in controlled method as it contained lead.
• All rotten and soft sections of the existing timber windows and joinery were replaced – Greendale had a joiners shop on site to make up the various beads, glazing bars and cills.required.
• A Tikkurila Paint Spec system was used to seal and decorate the joinery and Pediment woodwork. Greendale also decorated the metal balustrades to rear entrance.
• New conservation glass was installed to replace cracked panes and the timber widows were sealed to wall with Burnt Sand mastic (linseed oil based).
• A whole section of the existing ‘lambs tongue moulding’ profile feature was found to be rotten. Greendale engaged local artisans to hand carve new to match, which the team fitted.
• New solar film was installed to windows in this phase.
