Project Description:
Described as the most important remaining example of the romantic and picturesque style of architecture, Greendale Construction carried out a major refurbishment works on this prestigious Grade I listed building. The project was the sixth phase of a substantial repair, renovation and development programme for the castle, and the first significant change made to the building in the last decade.
A new reinforced concrete floor slab was installed in the Great Hall. The original arched brick vaulting was conserved with new slab over including under floor heating. New slab has been designed to take loadings from proposed new stair to gallery which was an existing feature of the castle prior to vandalism and fires in the 60’s and 70’s.
As a result of the restoration work, an estimated 55,000 visitors will now be able to access parts of Highcliffe Castle that were previously not open to the public, including the state dining room, butler’s pantry and the East Tower. We also completed improvements to the Great Hall, food preparation area and bar, as well as constructing new public toilets in the basement and upgrading the external car park.
